Sweet Tooth’s Lemire takes on the boy of steel in this new ongoing title. There’s a mystery lurking beneath Smallville that not even Superman knows. But it has ties to Superboy. Cue eerie music.

Absolute All-Star Superman

Grant Morrison week continues at Brave New Worlds as his All-Star Superman 12-issue run gets the Absolute treatment. The Eisner-Award winning series is a throwback to the Superman stories from the day. Bizarro, Zibarro and Lex Luthor’s final revenger are all here, plus a bonus sketchbook section and more (I am hoping for the steak knives myself).

Batman and Robin Deluxe HC Volume 2 Batman vs Robin

Shocker, another Morrison featured title as Batman and Robin volume 2 hits shelves this week. Collecting issues #7-12, more clues into Bruce Wayne’s mysterious death reveal themselves that force Batman and Damian to face off against one another (like in that John Travolta/Nic Cage movie, but without them actually switching faces).

Batman Battle for the Cowl TP

Collected in softcover, it’s the Batman battle royale for the right to wear the cowl after Bruce Wayne dies. Includes Batman: Battle for the Cowl #1-3, Gotham Gazette: Batman Dead #1 and Gotham Gazette: Batman Alive #1.

Ultimate Spider-Man #15 Brian Michael Bendis (w) Sara Pichelli (a)

True Confession Okay, I will admit that when it comes to Bendis he can sort of do no wrong. I think he could sit down and write a story about him having the worst headache of all time and I would go all in. I would buy the t-shirt, eat the Doritos, drink the Kool-Aid. But that’s just it, he’s that good. That being said, this latest issue of Ultimate Spider-man just might be one of the best of the run he has ever written.

Real World, Marvel Universe I will admit once again that the title is a little juvenile, but I think that is one of the reasons that it is so fresh, because it is juvenile but not in a little kid sort of way, but in an old-school Marvel sort of way. Peter Parker is a teenager going to high school with real problems, and then super-heroes problems. This book, and this issue, exposes them all.

Repercussions A lot of times when you read a book or story arc, after it’s over, the repercussions are cosmetic. But by the end of the next issue or the one after that, everything is back to normal. One of the best solicits to sell books each month is to say this “issue changes everything.” Well, I think things are changing now in Ultimate Spider-Man, as there are some real repercussions from the Chameleon taking over his identity.

Ultimate Universe A lot of people were upset with Ultimatum. And I know at the end of the day the story might not have been the best, but I think it was necessary. Created to tell a modern and “different” marvel story, a lot of the characters resembled their regular universe counterparts. The reset has helped change all that.

Jump Right In I would actually recommend reading the previous story arc before picking this issue up, if you have not done so yet. I don’t think you will get the full effect of what happens in this issue, which has a lot going on in it, if you do not.

Fantastic Four #584 Jonathan Hickman (w) Steve Epting (a)

Just Fantastic Hickman’s run is so sublime, so well told, so entertaining that when it is done, I want more. And isn’t that the truest compliment to an artist, always leave them wanting more.

Cover Story I was admittedly a little nervous when I saw the cover to this issue that Hickman was doing a retread story, and in a way, I sort of feel like it is. Ben Grimm is Ben Grimm again. There are hitches however, which is good because we all know eventually he will change back. That’s just the way it is in the comics.

What’s Going On Well, while Aunt Petunia’s favorite blue-eyed nephew is back and enjoying life, there are a lot of other things occurring in the issue. Don’t forget, this story is part of the larger “Three” story in which one of the four die. And some of the seeds are laid as to who or what could happen.

Only Waits for One For as long as we all have known Namor, there is only one person he would ever wait for – Sue Richards. And of course, in this issue she has left the team to mediate an issue for Namor, who is forced to wait for her. Could this be the beginning of the end for her?

The Surfer Remember last time when the Silver Surfer discovered Galactus’ body? Well, someone needs to be answering some questions. And you will never believe who is asking the questions. Hickman really knows how to set these issues up so that you HAVE to come back for more next time.

And One More Thing There is a panel where Ben and Johnny are doing a bunch of stuff together, including dinner with old friends. Wait until you see who Epting drew in there. It had to be written in Hickman’s script. Either way, kudos gentlemen, kudos.

Unearthed Not sure how these were found, but some early design sketches of the original Wonder Woman costume were discovered with William Moulton Marston comments. Remember all the craziness over the summer over the change to her costume. Well checkout the comments to the original costume. Take a look below at another sketch.

Cap vs Cap January will see the release of another Ultimate mini-series, Ultimate Captain America. The four-issue mini-series by Jason Aaron and Ron Garney will pit Captain America versus Captain America from the Vietnam War. Throw in Doc Brown and a flux capacitor and we have the makings of something here.

Casanova is Back That’s right, January will also see the release of a new Casanova mini-series by Matt Fraction and Fabio Moon. Casanova: Gula will be a four-issue mini that will ask the burning question, where is Waldo, er Casanova. It seems he is gone. And we mean GONE.

Action Comics #894

Death from Sandman is Back! Making her triumphant return to the DCU from the pages of Sandman, it’s Death! And she is back in this week’s issue of Action Comics as Luthor’s obsession for the orange ring literally puts him on death’s door. Wonder who is going to win this battle of wills?

Beasts of Burden Hellboy One-Shot

Holy crossovers Batman! Talk about cats and dogs living together. What will a cat-loving Hellboy do when he team’s up with Thompson’s Beasts of Burden to help out on a case. Isn’t that how it always starts; I need your help on a case, one thing leads to another, and Hellboy is adopting a talking cat.

Captain America #611

I know I am getting tired of writing this, so you must be getting tired of reading this but Marvel is promising that this issue will change everything as Cap goes on trial. I personally think he got caught putting a pack of gum in his pocket at Wawa – this economy is tough on everyone.

DC Comics Presents Superman #1

DC is collecting hard-to-find stories in these deluxe issues of DC Comics Presents. This issue collects Superman #179-185 and Superman: Man of Steel #121 as the overgrown boy scout takes on the Royal Flush Gang, Major Force and Dracula (can the X-Men be far behind?).

Fantastic Four by Jonathan Hickman Premiere Hardcover Volume 3

If you have not been reading Hickman’s Fantastic Four run, what the hell is wrong with you? This is some good stuff, quintessential FF in the making, and that is saying something after Lee-Kirby and Byrne. Anyhoo, Reed continues to try and solve everything, and you know this never leads to hugs and puppies (that’s in the Beasts of Burden/Hellboy one-shot this week). Collects Fantastic Four #579-582.

Northlanders TP Volume 4 The Plague Widow

Wood’s acclaimed Northlanders saga this time the story takes us to Viking Russia in A.D. 1020. Believe you me, I’ve heard stories, this is not a great time to be alive. Unless of course you are a viking with a very big sword, and some mead. Mead is always a good thing, even today. Collects Northlanders #21-28.

Superman Earth One HC
