Out this Wednesday, DC unveils a shocking new universe with some classic (and unexpected) characters in First Wave #1.  Meanwhile as the Twilight mystery deepens in the pages of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dark Horse Comics releases the previous arc in trade paperback BTVS Volume 6 Retreat.

From the mind of Brian Azzarello, who teased readers a few months back with his Batman/Doc Savage Special, comes First Wave #1 this week, illustrated by Rags Morales.  It’s a DC Universe like we have never seen before featuring Doc Savage, the Spirit, the Blackhawks plus Batman and Black Canary (among others) in a pulpy war in the shadows of war.  This new book looks promising.

Brad Meltzer is up for his turn on Buffy the Vampire Slayer with the latest arc – Twilight.  But how did the Scoobies get here you ask?  Well, relive the five issue story “Retreat” by Jane Espenson that brought an all-out war to the Buffy ‘verse and brought our heroes to their current predicament.

The legendary Paul Pope brought to my attention today via his twitter feed that COMICS GOD Jeff Smith is turning 50 today! Jeff is thehe creator and self publisher of BONE and RASL, but you all knew that already didn’t you, and is one of our favorite comic creators of all time! Anyway…HAPPY BIRTHDAY JEFF SMITH!!

I know I am trying to spotlight characters who may be obscure or even lost in the halls of history but after certain events in comics this week, Blackest Night #7, and last week, Green Lantern #51, I finally broke down and looked up the history on that guy who has been stirring up trouble for everyone who’s…well, alive. I know this isn’t really comics related news but Method Man, Ghostface Killah and Raekwon are going to be releasing a new album at the end of March ( it’s due March 3oth to be exact ) titled Wu-Massacre. While not all of our customers may be a fan of these guys, or their music, you gotta love this cover ( the real reason I am bringing this to your attention today ) by comic artist Chris Bachelo.  For track listing and other information click over to a real rap news site here. Eternal comic buzzboy and gossip guru Rich Johnston just brought to my attention via his twitter that a copy of Action Comics #1, the holy grail of back issue comics!, sold for $1,000,000!!!!!!! The 8.0 VF CGC’d copy apparently sold to an anonymous buyer and, while it is the second highest graded edition of this comic, now holds the record for most ever paid for a comic. You can read what Rich had to say over at his site Bleeding Cool, he may have updates as more comes out about this sale.  While I would love to own this comic, even in the worst possible condition, I am not sure I would drop a cool 1,000,000 on it. Would you?
