Joe the Barbarian

Posted by bnwadmin On January - 16 - 2010

Vertigo Comics latest premiere, Joe the Barbarian, ships this week from the mind of comic-master Grant Morrison.

An eight-issue mini-series, Morrison takes us on a ride with a kid who has a lot going on – overactive imagination, outcast at school, one parent and oh yeah, throw in some Type I diabetes to boot.

So the question, is Joe experiencing an insulin-deprived hysteria or is something else going on that has Joe traveling to lands with ninjas, robots, knights and space?  And, is Joe really the savior of this universe that is under attack by, you guessed it, dark forces.  With a little assistance from a samurai rodent, will Joe be able to liberate this new land, or should he just make sure he is taking his medication?  Then again, the alternative is clearly more fun.

With art by Sean Murphy, this premiere issue is just $1.00.  So, drop down a buck and give Joe the Barbarian a try this week.

Kick-Ass Trailer

Posted by bnwadmin On January - 9 - 2010

The movie version of Mark Millar and John Romita’s comic book Kick-Ass is coming to theaters this May. The movie seems stay pretty close to the comic. In case you didn’t know it goes something like this:

“Kick-Ass tells the story of average teenager Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson), a comic-book fanboy who decides to take his obsession as inspiration to become a real-life superhero. As any good superhero would, he chooses a new name — Kick-Ass — assembles a suit and mask to wear, and gets to work fighting crime. There’s only one problem standing in his way: Kick-Ass has absolutely no superpowers.”

Here’s the latest trailer:

Kick-Ass is directed by Mathew Vaughn (Layercake, Stardust) and stars Nicolas Cage (Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Peggy Sue Got Married), Chloë Moretz (500 Days of Summer), Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Superbad, Role Models) and Aaron Johnson as Dave “Kick-Ass” Lizewski.

Keep an eye out for the first trade of the comic coming soon in both hard and softcover editions.

Human Target

Posted by bnwadmin On January - 9 - 2010

Maybe you have seen the commercials for the new Fox show of the same name – Human Target – and thought to yourself, self, this looks a little interesting.  Well, now’s your chance to read the comic that inspired the show – Human Target Chance Meetings, available this week in trade paperback at Brave New Worlds.

Written by Peter Milligan, Christopher Chance makes his living by literally turning himself into a human target, disguising himself as people who have contracts out against them.  But of course, the story is not that simple and something goes horribly wrong when Chance impersonates an African American minister with a hit out on him.

If Chance Meetings (from Vertigo) does it for you, Brave New Worlds also has other Human Target collections in stock for you to try out – the four-issue miniseries by Milligan, Final Cut and Living in America.
