Brave New Worlds

Two new amazing releases find comic shelves this Wednesday.  Coincidentally, one comes from column A (Marvel) and one from column B (DC).  Now play nice fellas.  Hit the jump to find out more.

Galactus.  The Brood.  The Celestials.  Remember when these threats first surfaced in the Marvel Universe only to see the Fantastic Four, X-Men and Avengers smack them down, Darth Vader style?  Well, forget what you know, they were defeated way back in the day before coming back for more.  But who stopped them the first time – that would be S.H.I.E.L.D., but not Nick Fury’s team.  No, the original S.H.I.E.L.D. consisted of some of the greatest minds our planet has ever witnessed – Leonardo da Vinci, Galileo and Isaac Newton, to just name a few.

Intrigued?  You should be.  From the mind of Jonathan Hickman comes S.H.I.E.L.D. #1 this week, live the new Marvel insanity.

Also coming out this week, DC Comics finally gets around to collecting Grant Morrison and Frank Quietly’s latest collobartion – Batman and Robin Deluxe Edition Volume 1 – Batman Reborn.  This deluxe hardcover includes the now-classic first six issues of latest chapter in the saga of the Bat.  Bruce Wayne is gone.  Long Live Batman!  It’s a brand-new Caped Crusader, and a brand-new Boy Wonder from the mind that gave us Final Crisis, All-Star Superman and secondary mutations (New X-Men).

Free Comic Book Day 2010 is almost here – Saturday, May 1.  So the real question is, which Brave New Worlds location are you planning on attending for the day’s festivities?

Brave New Worlds Willow Grove

Marvel Comics artist Billy Tan (Thor) and Marvel Comics writer Duane Swierczynski (Cable, Iron Fist) will both be signing autographs from 1-3 p.m.

But wait, there’s more – the  Zenescope Comics’ 2009 Girl of the Year and Runner-Up will both be in attendance dressed as DC Comics Zatanna and Marvel Comics Black Cat, respectively.

Plus, Brave New Worlds Willow Grove will also be hosting Warhammer 40k, Dungeons & Dragons and HeroClix demonstrations during the day.

And of course, we will also have a select group of free comic books available as well.

Check out the 501st Star Wars Legion of Stormtroopers, Spider-Man and the 8′ Zombie Hulk (cos-play that you gotta see!) along with local artists groups doing sketches all day long.

Once again my comic-reading fate was placed in the hands of one of our regular customers, who this week pulled out Amazing Spider-Man Annual #22 from the summer of 1988.  There are two notable facts about this Evolutionary War tie-in, first and most exciting (no sarcasm there), it is the first appearance of Speedball.  And second, it is also one of Mark Bagley’s first full issues drawn at Marvel.  Yes, the guy has been around the block for a little bit.

Bagley actually was the winner of a 1983 Marvel contest, Marvel Try-Out book, which Jim Shooter used to draw new talent into the industry.  Bagley was the winner of the contest, and the rest is (spider) history.

The annual itself was a decent tale by Tom DeFalco with some help by David Michelinie.  It teamed up Spidey with Daredevil and saw J. Jonah Jameson happy as ever as he thought he finally caught his favorite punching bag on the wrong end of a crime, with drug dealers that he caught ending up dead.

But of course Spidey did not commit the crime.  Daredevil, and funny enough the Kingpin came to his rescue.  Meanwhile, the Evolutionary War story was weaved through the tale and their efforts were thwarted, for this issue.

This should have gone up a while ago, but better late than never…right?! BNW Old City Series Book Discussion on Promethea is Monday April 5th @ 7pm!

Brave New Worlds Willow Grove has added a fourth day to its successful Magic lineup, introducing Saturday Open EDH play, beginning Saturday, April 3 at Noon.  For just $4 (which covers prizes), you and your friends can join other fans of the Elder Dragon Highlander (EDH) format with open game play.

This is a friendly environment with a style of play fostered, not to build the most broken combo deck possible that kills the entire table by turn 5-7. The point of EDH (besides winning) is that everyone have as much fun as possible. Insane combo decks is not what we want.

We will use standard EDH banned and restricted list, with the only addition being Rofellos, Zur and Iona. If a card proves to be too good, it may be added to the store banned list if it is continued to be used.

We will not use the Brittany Mulligan, rather each player will receive one free mulligan and then not have to paris.

Players are required to use the same deck for each pod on the same day, but may change decks from week to week.
