Apologies for the delay on this one, but this week’s gem from the vault was just too good not to read several times.  I had to let it digest and simmer before I explained the awesomeness that was Green Arrow #32 (Volume 3).

Kidding.  The cover explains the entire issue titled “Boy’s Night Out,” as Roy and Connor are seen looking through a pair of legs – and those would be stripper legs.  Turns out Red Arrow’s idea of a good time is going out to a gentleman’s club.  This is what readers paid #2.50 for just six short years ago.

A Judd Winick-Manuel Garcia joint production the issue does have some redeeming qualities.  It is a good bonding issue between Roy and Connor, as Connor especially comes to understand the differences and similarities between himself and the man he would come to refer to as brother by story’s end.

And just in case you were worried that this was a get in touch with all your feelings episode, Winick threw in a store robbery for the new dynamic duo to foil, out of costume and with no quivers.  But the story was never about that, it was about Roy and Connor becoming, brothers.

There is a little bit of something for everyone in this week’s stuff that tickled my reading bone as I selected DC’s First Wave #1, Buffy the Vampire Slayer #33 and JSA All-Stars #4 as my stone cold locks of the week.

Bryan Azzarello and Rags Morales welcome readers into the world of pulp with Doc Savage, the Spirit and the Blackhawks in First Wave #1.  A mystery is brewing (because that is what happens in these pulp stories) and will deepen in subsequent issues as Bruce Wayne’s Batman joins the ranks.

Morales art serves as a perfect compliment for this lived-in world of real people doing the spectacular.  First Wave book one introduces a mystery and to the characters of Doc Savage and the Spirit, who appear to be heading to a head-to-head meeting, from different directions, ‘natch.

Meanwhile over in the Joss Whedon universe, Brad Meltzer continues his masterful story strokes in Twilight Part Two in Buffy the Vampire Slayer #33.  Twilight is finally revealed (although due to internet leaks a lot of people already know his identity) and the mystery that is Twilight just continues to deepen.  Personally I am still trying to figure out the endgame, but knowing Whedon I will never have seen it until its staring at me in the face, in print and pictures.  I’m a little thick.

Finally if you have not given JSA All-Stars a chance, I recommend jumping on that bandwagon.  Granted All-Stars does not contain the powerhouse lineup of the Justice Society of America, but it is still filled with riveting characters, especially in the hands of Matthew Sturges and Freddie Williams III.

JSA All-Stars #4 this week sees its opening story come to a head as Sand joins the book with some revelations about the battle to come with Johnny Sorrow.  I have to admit, I am not a big JSA guy but decided to give this book a chance when it started four months ago and have been nothing but entertained since its launch.  And I am really curious to see how the gang is going to stop Sorrow, who is really putting Stargirl through the hoops in this arc.

“Kneel before Zod.”  Readers looking for a hint of these three little words in the last New Kypton series might have been a little disappointed.  However, things are about to hear up on New Krypton this week in Superman: Last Stand of New Krypton #1.

A three-issue mini-series by James Robinson, Sterling Gates and Pete Woods, issue one launches the new Superman crossover event – Brainiac and the Legion of Super-Heroes.  Braniac attempts to reclaim his formal bottle city but Zod has been waiting for this moment and is prepared to defeat the tin-plated robot, even at the cost of EARTH!  (Oh my).

For some lighter fare this week, try out Peter Milligan’s latest effort – the Veritgo series Greek Street Volume 1: Blood Calls For Blood tradepapeback.  For just $9.99 get the first five-issues of a book that boats a greek chorus of sexy strippers, vengeful gangsters, a murderous youth and a disturbed clairvoyant teenage girl.

Greek Street is Milligan’s reinterpretation of the brutal and visceral Ancient Greek tragedies played out in modern-day London.

This Monday, March 8th, the Brave New Worlds Old City Book Discussion Club will kick off a new series by reading Promethea vol 1 by Alan Moore and J.H. Williams. All you have to do is just read the book and then come out to the shop by 7pm to discuss it amongst your fellow comic book readers! This book discussion group meets up on the 2nd Monday of every month.
